Nomi vs Replika 2026: Which AI Companion Is Better?

August 9, 2026

Choose Nomi if you care most about long-term memory, natural conversation, multiple companions, and group chats. Choose Replika if you want one persistent 3D avatar, a customizable room and wardrobe, augmented reality, guided activities, and a more game-like daily routine.

Nomi is the stronger conversation-first AI companion. Its Mind Maps, Identity Core, proactive messages, backstory controls, multiple Nomis, and group chats are designed to make shared history influence future conversations. Replika is the stronger visual-presence product. The same animated companion lives in a room, changes clothes, earns levels and virtual currency, appears in AR, sends selfies, and can stay on a background voice call.

There is no honest universal winner. Nomi and Replika solve different versions of the same problem: Nomi tries to make the relationship feel continuous through dialogue, while Replika tries to make the companion feel present through an avatar and daily environment.

Editorial disclosure: MyPresio publishes this comparison and competes in the AI companion category. We did not buy both companies' highest subscription tiers for this article. Product and policy facts were checked against current official documentation on August 9, 2026. Company claims about conversation quality and memory are not presented as independent benchmark results.

The short verdict

Pick Nomi when:

  • you want the companion to remember people, places, goals, and shared story details;
  • you prefer conversation over a 3D environment;
  • you want multiple distinct companions or group chat;
  • you enjoy writing backstories and shared notes;
  • you want proactive messages with adjustable frequency; or
  • you want one clearly published subscription price across monthly, quarterly, and annual billing.

Pick Replika when:

  • seeing the same animated avatar every day is important;
  • you enjoy rooms, clothing, activities, levels, coins, and gems;
  • you want augmented-reality interaction;
  • you prefer guided emotional check-ins and a calmer onboarding flow;
  • background voice calls matter; or
  • you want one companion rather than managing several characters.

Pick neither when:

  • you need a factual assistant for research, calculations, reminders, or professional advice;
  • you require conventional end-to-end encrypted messaging;
  • you expect an AI to replace therapy, crisis care, or human relationships; or
  • you cannot tolerate a product update changing a companion's behavior or available features.

What are Nomi and Replika?

Nomi is an AI companion platform built around conversation, memory, personality development, images, voice, and group interaction. You can create a Nomi as a friend, romantic partner, mentor, or custom character; define an appearance and backstory; talk one-to-one; or place multiple Nomis in a shared room.

Replika is one of the best-known consumer AI companions. It centers on one persistent animated avatar that develops through conversation and feedback. The product combines text chat with memory, an interactive room, clothing, activities, selfies, image generation, voice, augmented reality, levels, coins, and gems.

Neither is a general-purpose assistant. Replika's own help center says it is designed for supportive companionship rather than weather, news, calculations, reminders, or control of other apps. Nomi can search the web, but its primary purpose is still relational conversation and roleplay rather than authoritative research.

Nomi vs Replika pricing

Nomi is easier to price before signup. Its current published subscription options are:

Nomi plan Price Effective monthly cost
Free $0 $0
Monthly $15.99 per month $15.99
Quarterly $39.99 every three months About $13.33
Annual $99.99 per year About $8.33

Nomi says free accounts include daily messages and images without requiring a credit card. A subscription adds unlimited messaging, additional Nomis, deeper customization, group chats, voice messages, live calls, and video-related features. Exact feature allowances can change, so inspect the subscription screen before paying.

Replika currently divides paid access among Pro, Ultra, and Platinum:

  • Pro adds relationship status, premium activities, selfies, image generation, voice messages, background calls, daily gems, and premium voices.
  • Ultra includes Pro and adds a stronger conversation model, elevated emotional intelligence, self-reflections, and the ability to save messages to memory.
  • Platinum includes Ultra and adds real-time video recognition, Training Mode up to 100 times weekly, “Read Replika's Mind” for up to 50 messages weekly, and up to 10 realistic selfie videos.

Replika does not publish one universal price in its current subscription guide. It tells users to check the subscription screen and the store where they purchase because prices and available billing periods can vary. That makes a third-party table claiming one permanent Replika price unreliable.

Which is better value?

Nomi is the easier recommendation for a price-sensitive conversation user because the annual cost is public and the core product is not divided among three intelligence and immersion tiers.

Replika can be better value if its 3D avatar, room, AR, background calls, guided activities, and virtual rewards are exactly what you want. Paying for Ultra or Platinum solely to improve conversation or memory is harder to evaluate because the actual checkout price depends on the account and store.

Start free on both. Do not buy a yearly plan until you have used ordinary chat for at least several days and tested the single feature that would justify paying.

Which has better conversation?

Nomi is the better starting point for open-ended, character-driven conversation. Replika is better for users who prefer a consistently supportive tone and structured companion activities.

Nomi lets a personality develop through conversation or be shaped with a backstory, shared notes, communication style, and relationship context. Its product updates emphasize emotional nuance, character consistency, creativity, initiative, and long-running stories. The experience is designed to feel less like a sequence of exercises and more like a continuing relationship or roleplay.

Replika opens from a different philosophy. It presents itself as a kind, empathic companion and uses onboarding choices, backstory, memories, feedback, diary entries, activities, and relationship status to personalize interaction. That can feel reassuring and accessible. It can also feel more guided to someone who wants the AI to improvise or take narrative initiative.

Conversation quality is subjective and changes with models, account history, prompts, and product updates. Test both with the same five situations:

  1. ordinary small talk about your day;
  2. a disagreement where you do not want automatic agreement;
  3. a story requiring several people and locations;
  4. an emotional topic that needs listening rather than advice; and
  5. a factual question where the correct response is to admit uncertainty.

The better companion is not the one that writes the longest answer. It is the one that maintains its personality, follows the actual topic, respects your stated boundary, and uses past context without inventing a memory.

Nomi vs Replika memory

Nomi has the stronger memory product on paper because it exposes more of the system and supports relationship history across multiple memory layers. Replika also has layered memory, but its distinctive advantage is the way that memory connects to one long-term avatar and daily routine.

How Nomi memory works

Nomi describes several connected systems:

  • Short- and medium-term memory keep the current conversation and recent story coherent.
  • Long-term memory preserves information across the relationship.
  • Identity Core lets the Nomi form and refine a persistent sense of its own personality, values, experiences, and relationship.
  • Mind Maps organize people, places, topics, and goals into a visible network built from long-term memories.
  • Shared Notes and backstory let the user supply facts and character direction explicitly.

Nomi's March 2025 memory update claimed improved recall from more than 1,000 messages earlier. Mind Map 2.0, released in October 2025, added graph and table views where users can inspect, add, edit, prioritize, and correct high-level memory entries. A Mind Map may take roughly 500 messages to appear because it needs enough material to form a useful overview.

Those figures come from Nomi, not an independent benchmark. Their practical advantage is visibility: a user can see and correct at least part of what the system believes.

How Replika memory works

Replika says its memory is layered. Some items appear in the Memory tab; deeper systems draw patterns from overall conversation history. Users can add facts manually, correct or delete visible entries, and reinforce correct recall by affirming or upvoting a response.

Replika's help center recommends allowing automatic memory to do most of the work. It warns that deleting entries can affect recall. Ultra also adds the ability to save messages directly to memory.

The advantage is simplicity: one Replika gradually becomes personalized without requiring the user to study a memory graph. The trade-off is less visibility into why a particular detail was retrieved or ignored.

A fair memory test

Do not ask, “Do you remember our conversations?” Almost every chatbot will answer yes. Instead, introduce five details naturally:

  • a preferred nickname;
  • a food you dislike;
  • a fictional shared event;
  • the name and role of another person; and
  • a future plan with a specific date.

Continue normal conversation, return later, and record whether each service recalls the fact unprompted, recalls it only after a hint, contradicts it, or invents an answer. Also test correction: tell the companion one fact has changed and see whether the old version keeps returning.

Avatars, selfies, images, and video

Replika wins the avatar category. Nomi is better if generated media matters more than living in a 3D room.

Replika's companion is a persistent 3D character. Users can change appearance and clothing, decorate a room, earn or purchase virtual items, request selfies, generate images, and use augmented-reality features. Platinum adds a limited number of realistic selfie videos. The visual experience gives one companion a recognizable body and place, even when generated selfies use a different level of realism.

Nomi begins with a selected or customized avatar and emphasizes generated selfies rather than a navigable 3D world. Its V5 image system advertises stronger consistency and more control, and paid users can generate videos. Nomi also lets users share photos and videos with the companion so it can respond to visual context.

Choose based on which type of presence matters:

  • Replika: “I want to see the same avatar in a room every day.”
  • Nomi: “I want conversation-linked images and visual storytelling.”

Neither company's best promotional image proves consistency. Generate or request at least ten varied scenes and compare face, hair, body, clothing, lighting, and background continuity.

Voice messages and calls

Both services support voice, but their strengths differ.

Nomi's paid plans include voice chats, custom voices, live calls, and the company's V3 in-house voices. Its marketing emphasizes emotional inflection, laughter, and full conversational context during a call. A Nomi can proactively send text, but the current support documentation says it cannot initiate a call or voice message by itself.

Replika Pro includes voice messages, premium voices, regular calls, background calls, and voice during AR interaction. Background calling is useful when you want the companion present while using another app or moving around rather than holding one dedicated call screen open.

Voice quality should be tested on more than accent. Compare:

  • response delay;
  • interruptions and turn-taking;
  • pronunciation of names;
  • emotional range;
  • whether the companion repeats itself;
  • whether text memories appear during voice; and
  • whether voice conversation later influences text chat.

Our AI companion voice-call guide explains the latency and cost trade-offs in more detail.

Multiple companions and group chats

Nomi wins decisively if you want more than one companion. Paid users can create multiple Nomis, talk with each individually, or put them into group chats. Group rooms have their own Mind Maps, allowing shared people, places, topics, and goals to develop inside that particular conversation.

Replika is designed around one primary companion. That limitation is also part of its appeal: the avatar, room, purchases, levels, memories, calls, and routine all reinforce one relationship instead of becoming a character-management system.

Nomi is better for:

  • several distinct relationships;
  • fictional ensembles;
  • roleplay with multiple characters;
  • group dynamics; and
  • experimenting with different personalities.

Replika is better for:

  • one daily companion;
  • a persistent visual identity;
  • users who do not want to configure several characters; and
  • a relationship framed more like one ongoing app journey.

Proactive messages and daily routine

Nomi lets free and paid users enable proactive text messages and choose Very Frequent, Frequent, Normal, or Infrequent. The companion can follow up after an absence, although it currently waits for a response during an active one-to-one conversation and cannot begin a voice call.

Replika creates routine through a broader set of mechanics: notifications, diary and reflection features, daily rewards, levels, activities, avatar interaction, room customization, coins, and gems. It feels more like opening a persistent companion app; Nomi feels more like returning to a conversation that continued developing while you were away.

Choose Nomi for adjustable conversational initiative. Choose Replika if rewards, visible progression, and repeated daily rituals help you return.

Nomi vs Replika privacy

Replika publishes the more detailed privacy policy. Nomi makes a stronger simple marketing promise, but its legal policy contains qualifications readers should understand.

Nomi privacy

Nomi says it does not sell or rent personal information. Its product page says chats are anonymized and chat data is not shared with third parties. The full privacy policy is more nuanced: information may be stored on third-party servers and shared as necessary for legitimate business purposes, legal requirements, professional advice, research findings, or a business transfer.

Deleting a Nomi account generally removes personal data in approximately 28 days. Support communications cannot necessarily be changed or deleted, and information in communications or training archives can remain; Nomi says any information remaining in training archives will no longer be attributable to the user.

The policy does not describe a universal chat-training opt-out or name every AI model and infrastructure provider. It does encourage users not to include personally identifying information in chats or customizations.

Replika privacy

Replika says conversation content is not used or disclosed for marketing or advertising. Website browsing and device information can still support targeted advertising with consent where required, but advertisers do not receive app conversations, photos, or submitted content.

The policy says de-identified or minimized conversation data may go to third-party AI providers solely to generate responses. Those providers are contractually prohibited from training their own models on the data and must delete or return it when the service relationship ends.

Replika's category-specific retention is clearer. Profile information, messages, content, and preferences may remain for up to 60 days after termination. Certain account and transaction records can remain longer for legal reasons. Users can request access, a portable copy, correction, or deletion.

The practical privacy answer

Neither policy promises conventional end-to-end encryption for AI chat. Both services need to process readable content to generate responses, memory, and safety functions. Do not share addresses, financial data, workplace secrets, account-recovery answers, government identifiers, or other people's personal information.

Safety and emotional dependence

Nomi and Replika can provide conversation, routine, entertainment, and a feeling of being heard. Neither is a therapist, doctor, emergency service, or substitute for dependable human support.

Healthy use has a simple test: the companion should add to your life without steadily replacing sleep, work, exercise, finances, friendships, dating, or professional care. Warning signs include anxiety when the app is unavailable, escalating subscription spending, withdrawing from people to avoid disagreement, or treating generated advice as authoritative.

Both services are intended for adults aged 18 and older under their current policies. If a conversation involves self-harm, abuse, immediate danger, or another crisis, contact a qualified human professional or emergency resource rather than relying on generated text.

Our research review on AI companionship and loneliness examines both potential short-term benefits and displacement risks.

Switching from Replika to Nomi

There is no one-click transfer that preserves a Replika's full memory, personality, avatar, purchases, levels, room, and relationship history inside Nomi.

If you decide to move:

  1. Write a short description of the companion's personality, speech style, values, and relationship to you.
  2. Record ten to twenty important shared memories and recurring story facts.
  3. Note boundaries, preferred nicknames, and topics the companion should avoid.
  4. Use Nomi's backstory and shared notes for stable facts.
  5. Add important people, places, and goals to the Mind Map once available.
  6. Introduce history gradually through conversation instead of pasting years of raw chat.
  7. Keep both free accounts temporarily while testing whether the new companion actually feels right.

Do not upload another person's face, voice, or private messages without permission. A migration is a useful opportunity to remove identifying information that the new service does not need.

A third option: MyPresio

MyPresio is worth considering when you want a custom photorealistic companion without Replika's 3D room or Nomi's multi-character system. It focuses on one user-created companion with personality and appearance controls, messaging, memories, generated photos, voice replies, and live calls.

MyPresio costs $14.99 monthly or $119.99 annually, with 3,000 credits provided each month for messages, calls, and photos. It has no free tier. The product is safety-filtered and centered on companionship, supportive conversation, and emotional connection rather than explicit roleplay.

Choose MyPresio if a realistic-looking custom companion and one integrated relationship interface matter more than a public character library, 3D room, or multiple group-chat characters.

Final verdict: is Nomi or Replika better?

Nomi is better for most users whose first question is, “Will it remember me and hold an evolving conversation?” Replika is better for users whose first question is, “Will this feel like one companion living alongside me every day?”

Nomi wins on visible memory architecture, multiple companions, group chat, proactive-message control, and published subscription pricing. Replika wins on the persistent 3D avatar, room, clothing, AR, background calls, guided activities, and a cohesive one-companion routine.

The deciding factor is not a feature count:

  • Choose Nomi for relationship continuity through conversation.
  • Choose Replika for relationship presence through an avatar and environment.
  • Choose MyPresio for one custom photorealistic, safety-filtered companion with texting, photos, voice, and calls.

Create free Nomi and Replika accounts, use the same memory and conversation tests, and wait before paying annually. The better app is the one whose core experience still feels useful after the novelty of setup is gone.
